Nicknamed "the King of Calypso," Harry Belafonte, born in Harlem, New York on March 1, 1927, is a singer and actor born of a father from Martinique and a Jamaican mother. From the ages of five until ten, he lived with his grandmother in Jamaica before returning to New York before joining the navy during World War II. He popularized Caribbean music such as his hit song, "The Banana Boat Song," although he also sang blues, show tunes, and other genres. He has been married three times and has four children.
