The basis of this 1969 urban legend was that Beatles member Paul McCartney died in 1966 and had been replaced by a look-alike. Articles were published in the fall of 1969 which pointed to various “clues” that the musician had died in a car accident. Clues included a phrase said to be heard when one played “Revolution 9” from the White Album backwards, the fact that Paul was barefoot on the cover of Abby Road, and a host of items involving symbolism.
