Born John Winston Lennon (October 9, 1940 - December 8, 1980) in Liverpool, he changed his name to John Ono Lennon when he married Yoko Ono. He was a member of the Beatles, and along with Paul McCartney, he was part of the most successful songwriting team in the 20th century. An outspoken critic of the Vietnam War, he was targeted by the Nixon Administration, which sought to have him deported. Twice married, his first wife, Cynthia, had his son Julian. He and his second wife had his son Sean. He was shot and killed outside the Dakota Apartments in New York City by gunman Mark David Chapman, who remained with the body reading "The Catcher in the Rye" until the police arrived.
