The Beach Boys, an American rock band founded in 1961, had as its original band members brothers Brian, Carl, and Dennis Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. They were, at one time, thought to be competition for the Beatles. Their music was about surfing, sun, and the beach. Brian ceded leadership due to mental health issues and substance abuse. Carl died of lung cancer in 1988, and Dennis, who had been battling alcoholism, drowned in 1983 after a day of drinking.
