Lauren Bacall was born Betty Joan Perske in New York City on September 16, 1924. Her father was born in New Jersey and his parents were from Poland. Her mother was an immigrant from Romania. Lauren grew up to be one of Hollywood’s leading ladies in the 1940s and 1950s. She co-starred with Humphrey Bogart in "The African Queen," and "Key Largo," among other movies. Although Bogie was married at the time, they began a relationship and in 1945. She was 20, and he was 45. Bogart died of cancer in 1957, and left her a widow. She married actor Jason Robards, Jr., in 1961 but divorced him in 1969 because, she wrote in her autobiography, Robards was an active alcoholic.
