Alphonso Joseph D’Abruzzo, better known as Alan Alda (born January 28, 1936) is famous as an actor, screenwriter, director, and author. Born in New York City, he is probably most famous for his portrayal of Hawkeye Pierce in the television series M*A*S*H. His father, Robert Alda, was a singer and actor with the birth name of Alphonso Giuseppe Giovanni Roberto D’Abruzzo), and his mother was a showgirl. When he was seven years old, he had polio, though it was successfully treated. He studied in Paris, France during his junior year in high school.
