The Wars of the Roses were civil wars which were fought by the House of York, whose symbol was the white rose, and the House of Lancaster, whose symbol was the red rose. They were branches of the Plantagenet royal house, which descended from King Edward III. The conflict began when Henry Bolingbroke, Duke of Lancaster, overthrew his cousin, King Richard II and ended when King Henry VII began the Tudor dynasty, uniting the white and red roses with the Tudor rose.
