The "cold war" is the term which is used to depict the post-World War II relationship between the United States and the USSR. Both nations possessed nuclear weapons and therefore were cautious about their actions and rhetoric toward one another. Although neither side fought the other directly, they did use proxies through which they waged war against one another, including the war in Vietnam and the 1979 invasion of Afghanistan.
