The two Boer Wars were fought between the two independent Boer republics, the Orange Free State and the Transvaal Republic. The first one of the wars, fought in 1880 and 1881, was a rebellion of farmers (known in South Africa as "boers") who were fighting against British rule in the Transvaal. The second one was fought from 1899 to 1902 and ended in the Boer republics being absorbed into British colonies which would later become part of the Union of South Africa.
