Hepatitis A is an acute infectious disease of the liver. This type of hepatitis used to be known as infectious hepatitis and is caused by a virus and is transmitted via contaminated water or food. Being that the virus spreads by the fecal-oral route, hepatitis A usually occurs under overcrowded conditions or where poor sanitation is the norm.
