Sickle cell disease or sickle cell anemia is a rare and inherited blood disorder characterized by crescent-shaped red blood cells and chronic anemia caused by excessive destruction of red blood cells. Sickle cell disease affects blacks almost exclusively. In many cases, there need only be one black ancestor with a copy of the gene to develop the disease or the trait.
