The independent city of Williamsburg, Virginia was originally called Middle Plantation, a fortified settlement founded in 1632. It was renamed Williamsburg when Williamsburg became the Colonial capital in 1698. Chartered in 1722, it was the very eye of the events which were the American Revolution. It was the site of the Gunpowder Incident which began mere days after the Battles of Lexington and Concord and days before the news of Shot Heard Round the World was actually received.
