Newport News is designated an independent city on the north shore of the James River in Virginia. Orginally part of Warwick County, one of the original eight shires in the state in 1634, it was formed by the House of Burgesses in the Colony of Virginia. It was mostly undeveloped until 1881, when the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway began operation.
