South Padre Island is located on a barrier island along the Gulf Coast of the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. The town is named after Jose Nicolas Balli, a Catholic priest and early settler. In recent years, the town has become a popular spring break destinaton for college students and tourists.

Founded in 1977, Sea Turtle, Inc. was formed to aid in the protection and recovery of the endangered Kemp's Ridley sea turtle, and its role has since expanded to rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing injured turtles, educating the public, and assisting with conservation efforts for all marine turtle species.
