Named for the Santa Fe Railroad, which ran through the town, Santa Fe, Texas is in Galveston County, Texas. In 1877, the railroad was built through the western part of the county and, by 1900, the small towns of Alta Loma, Arcadia and Algoa, all unincorporated, had been formed along the railway, and the Santa Fe Independent School District was established to serve the area. In the mid-1970s, the city of Hitchcock tried to annex a portion of eastern Alta Loma. In order to prevent annexation by Hitchcock, Alta Loma and parts of Arcadia were incorporated as Santa Fe. Later, the remainder of Arcadia and parts of Algoa were annexed to Santa Fe, which is now twice the size of Hitchcock.
