Los Fresnos is a small city in south-central Cameron County, in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. The community was formed in 1912, when Lon Hill, an early landowner, formed a company to develop a canal system that would use water from the Rio Grande River to irrigate land for agricultural purposes. The coming of the railroad in the early 1900s brought settlers to the area and, by 1915, a post office was established. The city was named for the Spanish word for the ash trees that were found in the woods and along streams in the area.
