Brownsville is located in the southernmost tip of Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley region. It is the seat of Cameron County, and the fifteenth largest city in the state. Its history reaches back to 1845, when a fort on the Mexican border was commissioned. Before completion, the Mexican army attacked, in a battle that resulted in the death of Major Jacob Brown. The new fort was named in his honor by General Zachary Taylor.
