Providence is the most populated city in Rhode Island, and the state capital. Founded by Roger Williams, a religious exile from the Massachusetts Bay Colony, in 1636, the city was named for God's merciful Providence. Providence was one of the original Thirteen Colonies of the United States, and the city escaped British occupation during the Revolutionary War. Today, the city is very compact, being one of the most densely populated cities in the nation.
