Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, is known as both the "City of Bridges" and "Steel City." Founded in 1758 by General John Forbes, it was named for Sir William Pitt, British statesman who eventually became England's Prime Minister. Its unusual spelling, "-burgh" instead of '-burg," was made law in 1794, though it reverted back for a short time but restored in 1911 after a large majority of citizens campaigned to have it so.
