Tulsa, the seat of Tulsa County, Oklahoma, was settled in the 1830s by the Creeks. Situated on the Arkansas River, it was incorporated in 1898 and flourished due in large part to the discovery of oil. In 1921, it was the site of the Tulsa Race Riot, which is also referred to as "the night that Tulsa died," in which more than 800 people were hospitalized, and 35 city blocks were burned. More than 25 people were killed, though there were probably more, and some estimates are as high as 3,000
