The town of Bedford was established in 1680 when a small group of Puritans purchased a tract of land from Chief Katonah, and was made part of Connecticut in 1697, then transferred to New York by decree of King William III of England, as the result of a boundary dispute. Bedford is located in the northeastern part of Westchester County, and has three unincorporated hamlets, known as Bedford Hills, Bedford Village and Katonah.
