The town of Newton was created in 1864 from portions of Newton Township, which was then dissolved. The township had been established as a precinct in 1751, and incorporated as one of New Jersey’s initial townships in 1798. The town of Newton is the county seat of Sussex County. Newton is northwest of Lake Mohawk and east of Swartswood State Park. The town hosts the public-use airport, Newton Airport, just about three miles south of the central business district.
