East Orange was incorporated at a township in 1863, becoming a city in 1899. The city is in Essex County, New Jersey, bordered by Newark, South Orange, Orange, Glen Ridge, and Bloomfield. Prior to 1780, the area that was to become East Orange was known as Newark Mountain, at which time it included all of the Oranges, and was governmentally part of Newark.
