Omaha is the largest city in Nebraska, and the seat of Douglas County. The city was built along the Missouri River, north of the mouth of the Platte River. Its history precedes its 1854 founding by land speculators from nearby Council Bluffs, Iowa. Even before it was legal to claim land in Indian country, Mormons had built a temporary town there in 1846, which they named Cutler’s Park, and William D. Brown operated the Lone Tree Ferry there, bringing settlers from Council Bluffs to Omaha. After the area was opened to settlement, its founding members received lots in Scriptown, which was the name of the first subdivision of Omaha, which was then part of Nebraska Territory. The area developed quickly, and were incorporated into the city of Omaha in 1877. Notable natives of Omaha have included Fred Astaire, Warren Buffet, Marlon Brando, General George Crook, Henry and Peter Fonda, Gale Sayers, Malcolm X, and Paula Zahn.
