Situated in Pemiscot County, north of the junction of Interstate 55 and US Highway 412, the city of Hayti was founded in 1894, and named for Haiti, on the island of Hispaniola, in the Greater Antilles of the Caribbean. Hayti was a name commonly used by whites to refer to black settlements, although today the population of the city is more than fifty percent white. Hayti is west of the Mississippi River, northeast of Braggadocio, and southwest of Concord.
