Named for the University of Cambridge in England, the city of Cambridge is known for its institutions of higher learning, as it is home to Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and several other smaller colleges and universities. When the city was first settled in 1630, it was known as Newe Towne, which was changed to Cambridge in 1638.
