Baxter State Park was established between the years of 1931 and 1962. through twenty-eight donations of land, in trust, from Percival P. Baxter, creating the park that is more than two hundred thousand acres in size. As specified by Baxter, Baxter State Park is not part of the Maine State Park System but is, rather, governed by the Baxter State Park Authority. Baxter Peak, Maine’s highest peak, is part of Mount Katahdin, a cluster of mountains within Baxter State Park.
