First settled in 1829 by Thomas Fowler and his family, only a couple of farms were there before the area was selected as the site for a new pulp and paper mill, which became the Great Northern Paper Company. Since the site was not near any towns, one had to be built, much of it by GNP. Construction began on the mill in 1899, and a town quickly grew around it, prompting its nickname as the "Magic City," incorporated in 1901.
