Lexington was founded in 1775 in what was then Virginia, seventeen years before Kentucky became a state, and named for the city in Massachusetts by the same name, as the Battle of Lexington and Concord had taken place earlier that year. Now the second-largest city in Kentucky, it is officially known as Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, as the city government combined with the Fayette County government in 1974.
