Alton, a city in Madison County, Illinois, was developed by Rufus Easton, who operated a ferry across the Mississippi River into Missouri, and named after his son. During the time of the War Between the States, Alton was a center for the abolitionist movement. It was here that abolitionist Elijah P. Lovejoy was killed by a mob while trying to protect his printing press from being destroyed, for the third time, after he printed abolitionist tracts.
