Conyers, the seat and only city in Rockdale County, was settled between 1816 and 1821, the first settler being John Holcomb, a blacksmith. When the railroad was ready to come through town, Dr. W.D. Conyers, a banker from Covington, purchased Mr. Holcomb's land and sold it to the Georgia Railroad, and the settlement itself grew up around a watering post established by the rail line.
