As the third largest municipality in Connecticut, New Haven has approximately 120,000 population. It is nicknamed "Elm City" because the city had the first public tree planting program in America which included large elms. Many of the original elms perished from Dutch Elm disease in the mid-20th century, some of which have since been replanted. It is the home of Yale University, and is recognized as a National Historic Planning Landmark by the American Institute of Certified Planners.
