The county seat of Siskiyou County is Yreka, California. In 1851, Abraham Thompson was traveling the Siskiyou Trail from Oregon when he discovered gold. Within a month, thousands of miners were on the scene of what they called Thompson’s Dry Diggings, erecting tents, shanties, and cabins. The town was finally named after the Shasta indian word that means “white mountain,” referring to Mt. Shasta. In 1941, it was named the capital of the
