Vallejo, California, is in Solano County and was named in honor of General Mariano Vallejo, the officer of Mexico who assisted in the transition of California from a Mexican possession to an American state and who founded the city. It was the capital of California in 1852, and then again for a brief time in 1853. In 2008, Vallejo became the largest city in the state ever to file for bankruptcy.
