Santa Monica, California, is a beach city in Los Angeles County. It was named for Saint Monica of Hippo, on whose feast day the first Spaniards visited what is now the city. It was incorporated in 1886, and in the early 1900s, with amusement piers all the rage, Santa Monica Pier became a popular one.
