The city of Santa Cruz, Spanish for “holy cross,” named in honor of the Santa Cruz Mountains, is the county seat of Santa Cruz County. It was incorporated as a town in 1866 and got its first charter as a city in 1876. The October 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake was centered at the highest point in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and much of the downtown area was damaged or destroyed.
