San Mateo is located in San Mateo County in Northern California, just south of San Francisco. During the 1850s, rich San Franciscans came to the area looking for summer homes. They mostly bought property in Burlingame and Hillsborough, but many mansions were built in San Mateo. Seven Oaks, the home of Bank of America founder A.P. Giannini, is still standing in San Mateo. The city was incorporated in 1894.
