Sacramento is the state capitol of California and is situated in Sacramento County. It became a city largely due to the efforts of John Sutter, whose mill was the famed beginning of the Gold Rush, and grew due to its position as a hub for the railroad, Pony Express, wagon trains, and stagecoaches. It was named for the river of the same name, and that river was named in honor of the "Most Holy Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ," which is the Roman Catholic term for the Eucharist.
