Matamoros is a city on the southern bank of the Rio Grande River in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas, Mexico. It is directly across the river from Brownsville, Texas. Matamoros was the site of several battles and events during the Mexican War of Independence, the Mexican Revolution, the Texas Revolution, the American Civil War, and the French Intervention. Declaring itself an international free trade zone in 1858, the Port of Bagdad, in Matamoros, became one of the leading commercial ports in the world during the American Civil War.
